Ingenious sound-manipulators Matmos have a new record set for release this spring titled The Rose Has Teeth In The Mouth Of A Beast. As with previous concept-heavy creations like the infamous, surgery-sampling A Chance To Cut Is A Chance To Cure, the duo's latest is a song-cycle about various historical/musical figures they admire, among them the Germs' Darby Crash, Joe Meek, and William S. Burroughs. Ever wondered what a "booty bass" tribute to Valerie Solanas would sound like? How about a tune in the style of "Wagnerian slapstick" for King Ludwig II of Barvaria? It's all here, as well as the sampled sounds of head-shaving, flesh-burning and....ummm....semen and "the embalmed reproductive tract of a cow." Less-stomach churning guests include Bjork and Antony (of Antony And The Johnsons). The album will also contain "10 specially commissioned works of portraiture" from folks like Daniel Clowes and Jason Mecier. Matador Records will be unleashing this twisted-epic on May 9.
