Fiery Furnace Burns Alone

Fiery Furnace Burns Alone
May 1, 2006
Story by: Rebecca Raber

Matt Friedberger, the male half of Brooklyn duo Fiery Furnaces, is set to release his solo debut, a double album called Winter Woman/Holy Ghost Language School, August 8. The record will also be the debut release of newly formed 859 Records, which is run by the former head of Rough Trade America, Keith Wood. Disc one, Winter Woman, is supposed to showcase Friedberger’s most accessible pop songs and disc two, Holy Ghost Language School, is intended to be more experimental. Friedberger, who has been working on these tracks for three years, wrote all the songs and played all the instruments (save some drum parts that John McEntire from Tortoise laid down) on these recordings himself.

While awaiting solo success, Friedberger’s day job will keep him busy for the next couple of months. This week the Fiery Furnaces kick off their European tour in Manchester, England, and June 8 they return stateside for a month’s worth of dates.
