Like a greatest hits record with a twist (sort of a part two to Standing On A Beach), Mixed Up provides remixes to some of our favorite Cure hits, ranging from 1980's somber "A Forest" to 1989's mega-huge "Love Song" and many stops in between. Instead of just putting a house beat behind all the tracks, these 10 remixes-and one new song, "Never Enough"-are edited in a way distinctive to each song. The gloominess of some songs like "Pictures Of You" and "Lullaby" are made more gloomy. The happy-go-lucky nature of "Hot Hot Hot!!!" and "The Caterpillar" are made more happy. The vigor of "Fascination Street" and "The Walk" are made more vigorous. It can be argued that these songs don't need to be redone like this, but the forces behind Mixed Up did a wonderful lob in not bastardizing their original feelings. Instead, Mixed Up looks at a bevy of Cure hits in a slightly different light-since we already all have these songs in our collections, why not put out new versions? The resulting compilation serves as an accurate reminder of a decade full of pop genius, and a launching pad for the incarnation of The Cure for the next decade.
