Cult '70s songstress Judee Sill may not be well-known, but that is bound to change with the September 22 release of Crayon Angel: A Tribute to The Music Of Judee Sill via American Dust. The tribute album should expose Sill, who was the first artist signed to David Geffen's Asylum label, to a larger audience, one she never found on her own before dying of a drug overdose in 1979. While the album is mostly covers of Sill songs by artists like Nicholai Dunger, Ron Sexsmith and Final Fantasy, it also features a pair of songs that have been previously unreleased until now. Bill Callahan provides the first known recording of "Like a Rainbow" (co-written with Sill's former boyfriend/L. Frank Baum descendant Lal Baum), and Beth Orton takes on the never-recorded "Reach For The Sky." Can't wait another week? You can stream Orton's contribution to the collection here.
