Max's Kansas City Launches Virtual Venue With New Website
Oct 7, 2009
Story by: Pier Harrison

The legendary 1960s crucible of creativity known as Max's Kansas City may be long gone from Park Ave South in New York City, but its showcases of interdisciplinary collaboration live on with the launch of MaxsKansasCity.com. The venue that gave Blondie, David Bowie and Lou Reed their first audiences was also host to noted figures in fashion, film, literature and art as well as music, from Allen Ginsberg to Al Pacino. It was, as William S. Burroughs put it, "the intersection of everything."

Besides informative archives of the 'who's who' from Max's Kansas City's heyday, the site will feature "trio exhibitions," displaying one visual artist, one designer and one musician or band united by some common denominator. They teamed Tom Sachs, Anna Sui and the Flaming Lips as artists who bring fantasy into reality and pegged Vampire Weekend side project Discovery with Asgar/Gabriel and designers Victor & Rolf for their investments in collaboration. Another section commemorates Max's famous "Back Room," where minds like Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground came together for collaborations, offering contemporary creatives a platform to discuss the era's icons; elsewhere you can find interviews with said icons and rare concert footage.

If you want to find out what Andrew W.K. thought of Robert Mappelthorpe, or spent your days imagining what it was like when Bruce Springsteen sang "Growing Up" in 1972, now's your chance. Though, if you are a devoted Springsteen fanatic, you probably already know.
