 CLOAK/DAGGER: Lost Art
Nov 18, 2009
By Michael Schwab

Hard-hitting punk outfit, Cloak/Dagger, are back with their second full-length, Lost Art, which came out on Tuesday of last week. The band caught the attention of listeners all over with their full-length debut, We Are, two years ago. Now, the Richmond-based quartet is back with an intensive blend of all things heavy, dirty and dangerous. Pulling influences from a spectrum of heavy music, Cloak/Dagger is as likely to bring Black Flag to mind as it does the Who. It manages to do so with a subtle finesse that brings the modern, indie edge to their sound, creating a brand of hardcore that is as accessible as it is violent.

On Lost Art, Cloak/Dagger use this formula more economically and provocatively than they ever have in their three-year lifespan. Their hardcore format is scattered with outliers that make Lost Art a musically culminating listen. One can hear traces of their favorite punk bands in each song on the album, from the Fugazi-inspired melodic hardcore in songs like opener "Billions Millions" and "Lower Eastsada" to the Drive Like Jehu-esque guitar parts in "Dead Town Beat" and "In My Orbit." But what's most important about Lost Art is hard proof that Cloak/Dagger know how to rock hard, producing and album of listener-friendly music that still clocks in at a half-hour and with no breakdowns.
