Broken Social Scene On Break

Broken Social Scene On Break
Jul 12, 2006
Story by: Kevin Kampwirth

Canadian indie collective Broken Social Scene—a super group so super we can make up words to describe their superness (see!)—will reportedly take an indefinite hiatus following a North American tour later this fall. In an interview with Billboard.com preceding a July 6 show in Brooklyn, BSS frontman Kevin Drew alluded to the fact that the band has lost some of the creative spirit that initially drove them, and that, recently, they've only been getting together to tour. "If we kept going [without a break], we'd be taking it for granted," Drew said. "Next time, we'd be doing college tours for money. That sucks the music out of you. Next thing you know, you're trying to get teenagers to buy your albums."

Given BSS's ridiculously prodigious pedigree (current members include Jason Collett, Amy Millan and Evan Cranley of Stars, Leslie Feist of, um, Feist, and James Shaw and Emily Haines of Metric), no one, it seems, will be suffering from lack of projects. Drew and fellow founding member Brendan Canning also have their own non-BSS related efforts in the works. The band currently has some European and Canadian dates scheduled throughout the summer in addition to the US dates listed below, but further tour plans have yet to be finalized.
Tour Dates:
08/03 – Los Angeles, CA – Greek Theatre
08/04 – Berkley, CA – Greek Theatre
08/06 – Chicago, IL – Grant Park (Lollapalooza)
