HEART THROBS: JUBILEE TWIST
Nov 10, 2000
By Andy Skibins

For a professional athlete, getting traded or demoted always seems to serve as a wake-up call, and in a sense, the same can be said for musicians. There is nothing better to add perspective and a jolt of reality than to be faced with the cold stare of the real world, and nothing more satisfying and invigorating than to stand up defiantly to that stare and shine through strongly. After a successful debut with 1990's Cleopatra Grip, this Clapham, England quintet almost self-destructed in Fleetwood Mac-style relationship friction, resulting in sisters Rose and Rachel Carlotti parting ways. Vocalist Rose pushed on, using the tension created to practically start the band anew. The resulting album, Jubilee Twist, is a confident, dramatic and dynamic pop collection that contains a lot of personality and atmosphere, giving their animated pop songs an emotional character and more security than on their debut. Still, they manage to exude the charming naivete and anxiety that gives them their graceful distinction. Aces: "Outside," "Hooligan," "Bright Green Day" and "Tiny Feet."
