 STEREOLAB: "John Cage Bubblegum"
Nov 10, 2000
By Megan McLaughlin

Stereolab's charm is the blend of strong but pretty instruments and Seaya's rich, lilting vocals. Once again on its latest single, Stereolab takes the distinct precision of New Zealand bands and throws a British indie-rock twist into the works, creating something both beautiful and painful at the same time. What's a little different this time out are the vocals, which are lifted up high over the mix, and the clear, single-minded notes of the guitar. "John Cage Bubblegum," with its understated Moog and farfisa effects, has a melancholy tone laid over its simple melody. "Eoge D'Eros," sung in French, has a fast-paced buzzing farfisa over more traditional droning, one-note guitars.
