AIMEE MANN: WHATEVER Nov 10, 2000
By Steve Ciabattoni
Whatever, the solo debut from former `Til Tuesday singer/songstress Aimee Mann, marks the rediscovery of a valuable pop-music talent. The labor of an unadulterated musical vision (the album was recorded well before she'd inked a deal with Imago), Mann's first full-length outing hasn't any hollow musical or emotional moments, its rousing pop singles smartly balancing ballads of strong resolve, both revealing much about the woman behind the voice. Whatever is loaded with brilliant, precise melodies, yet it is the depth of Mann's character and her determination to write songs that are actually about something that truly makes these 13 songs captivating. Even when Mann turns a clever phrase, she does so inward, probing a weakness, unlocking confidence or uncovering painful realizations ("I should've known you would betray me but without the kiss," from "I Should've Known"). Jon Brion's production (one part George Martin, two parts Mitchell Froom) tastefully decorates these sure-footed melodies, adding a healthy shine to an already delicious apple. Spend time with: "4th Of July," "Say Anything," "I Should've Known" and "I Know There's A Word."
