 STEREOLAB: "Lo Boob Oscilator"
Nov 10, 2000
By LYDIA ANDERSON

The ever-prolific Stereolab finds another outlet for two new songs on a Sub Pop single, building upon a now-established sound but avoiding the trap of predictability. At first "La Boob Oscilator" pretends it's one of Stereolab's lighter moments, vocalist Laetitia Sadier's soothing French lulling the song into a gentle lullabye, plush organ sounds drifting in at pertinent moments, until a transitional midway point is reached and the organs and percussion gain force, turning the song's gentle spray into a clotted storm. English is the language of choice on "Tempter," which is more of a groove than a song. It builds slowly, getting weirder along the way, unidentifiable noises flitting through, all groping for space in the dense mix.
