T-POWER: Waveform
Nov 10, 2000
By Tim Haslett

The changing fortunes of the visionary ambient! experimental drum 'n' bass artist T-Power have meant label changes and some confusion as to who exactly is minding his career on this side of the Atlantic. It would appear that Airbag Records, under the A & R direction of React America's Aldo Bender (it looks as though the latter label may be sold to an unspecified major in the near future), is going to ensure that T-Power's music gets the distribution it so richly deserves. His work for the S.O.U.R. label has been consistently well ahead of its time, merging junglist bass lines with drifting synth figures and surface-of-the-moon soundscapes. The latest record, Waveform, is no exception. Opening with the hilariously titled "Life In The Freezer," this complex, dense record moves in and out of the line of vision. "Purple Sunshine Blotter" is the perhaps the most bizarre moment here, twisting and turning like a sort of analog seizure. "Stress Fractures" sounds like its name, the fabric of the bass line is rent by inorganic noise while the rattling breakbeats ensure that your attention never wavers. This is an expansive, ambitious album that deserves serious attention.
