Sugarcubes Regroup For 'Birthday'

Sugarcubes Regroup For 'Birthday'

Story by: Kevin Kampwirth

Before Björk was too cool for last names, she was Björk Gundmundsdottir, lead singer of the influential Icelandic alt-pop ensemble, the Sugarcubes. Fourteen years after their dissolution, the band will regroup for a live gig November 17 in Reykjavik to mark the 20th anniversary of their first single, "Birthday," according to a statement posted on Björk 's website. "This release was the start to the splendid career of the Sugarcubes and impressive releases of Icelandic artists in Iceland and abroad alike. These first steps made by the Sugarcubes have made an everlasting impact and influence on the Icelandic export of music."

All profits from the show will benefit Smekkleysa SM, the record label the Cubes established while still active, which works on a nonprofit basis to help promote Icelandic music and artists. No immediate word on whether the band will play any additional shows, as Björk , apparently, has a solo career to focus on.
