PIEBALD: If It Weren't For Venetian Blinds It Would Be Curtains Nov 10, 2000
By Cheryl Botchick
Given emocore's reliance on bombast, it's impossible for bands in that genre to get by on intensity alone. Even the most incidental emo combos play with bloody-fingered force and gut-wrenching sincerity. Piebald, however, stands out by virtue of its lightheartedness. The band peppers its lyrics with funny quips (e.g. the silly album title, lyrics such as "They would be justified in laughing/If this was a scene from Naked Gun Part III"), loopy, conversational rhetoric ("It's not funny like 'ha -ha,'/It's funny like 'I told you so'"), and vivid imagery (the lyrics to "Giddy Like A Schoolgirl"). By pitting its unique lyrical personality against its exuberant playing, Piebald pulls away from the pack. Recommended for anyone who prefers the quirky fun of the Archers Of Loaf's Icky Mettle to the gloomier work of Sunny Day Real Estate.
