HUNGRY GHOSTS: Alone, Alone
Jun 29, 2000
By Cheryl Botchick

By virtue of their origin (Melbourne, Australia) and basic structure (an instrumental trio), the Hungry Ghosts are destined to get many of their mentions in the same breath as the revered Dirty Three. Though such quick comparisons are usually unfair, this particular one holds water past the obvious similarities between the two. The Hungry Ghosts are blessed with the same ability to utter a million words with a single instrumental phrase and to turn a melancholy passage into a triumphant climax. The differences between the two are notable enough, however, to make the Hungry Ghosts worth seeking out. Most of their songs for example, focus on the interplay of electric and acoustic guitar with organ and accordion -- as opposed to the Dirty Three's soaring fiddle. More important, the Ghosts take their cues from instrumental masters like Ennio Morricone more than they adhere to the Three's long-winded song delivery. Finally, Alone, Alone is divided into three suites of shorter songs, each with a distinct voice -- and that makes the work seem like a soundtrack to an unrealized film rather than an extended lamentation.
