Mozart Foundation Enables Downloaders

If you can’t legally download Mozart MP3s, at least you can now download his scores to record on your own. This week, the Internationale Stiftung Mozarteum (International Mozart Foundation) began hosting PDFs of every note the Austrian composer ever put to paper in celebration of the sesquibicentennial of his birth. That’s more than 125 volumes of 600 works comprising 24,000 pages, not to mention another 8,000 pages of the foundation's own critical analysis and historical reports. The works come from publisher Barenreiter’s New Mozart Edition, for which the organization paid $400,000 for the digital publication rights, with financial backing from Packard Humanities Institute of Los Altos, California. Since these are for private, scholarly and educational use, they're a music student’s dream. Finally, the deft contrapuntal majesty of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” which Wolfgang didn’t write but explored in 12 variations, is no longer such a mystery.
