Napster Acquires AOL Music Subscribers

Napster Acquires AOL Music Subscribers
Jan 16, 2007
Story by: Taylor Mason

Though only a week has passed since Napster acquired the subscriber base of Virgin Digital, the downloading giant shows no signs of slowing down, as they prepare to take over as the official music subscription service for AOL Music. Dropping the services of Music Now, which AOL acquired via Circuit City in 2005, AOL is informing all Music Now clients of the automatic transfer to Napster, unless they should opt otherwise.

The transfer will take place over the next two months, as Napster surpasses the Virgin Digital program by recreating existing members’ entire library, meaning that there will be no need to re-download previously purchased tracks. AOL will promote the Napster service throughout its various sites and will receive a percentage of each resulting Napster subscription.
