WEDGE: Wedge Nov 10, 2000

Illinois' Wedge might have a mighty firm grasp on its own pop sensibilities, but the band is not going to let that restrict the type of songs it writes. On this album, the band enjoys taking the listener through several mood changes, first charging across a doubled-up guitar-fueled pop wonder, then wandering lazily through a Neil Young-ish countrified rocker. At either extreme, you have "Part Of You," which sounds like it could have been a Crowded House tune, and the chunky "Sugar," which almost recalls Adrian Belew in places, partly due to lead vocalist Hugh Hart's enunciations. These sometimes drastic stylistic changes are all tinted with the same wonderfully warm guitar tones, and that's one of the elements that helps keep the whole collection as cohesive as it is. Add that to the amount of melodic care that's spoonfed into each song and what emerges is a solid collection of infectious, memorable tracks. Pry into: "Idolizer," "Next Impossible" and "Starfish."
