SMASHING PUMPKINS: Earphoria Dec 12, 2002
By Brad Filicky
During the early-to-mid-1990s, the Smashing Pumpkins were one of the most popular bands in the world. In addition to unleashing a virtual treasure trove of recorded work during its heyday, the Chicago group released a highly successful home video, Vieuphoria, in 1994. Despite the group's break up in 2000, there are still countless Smashing Pumpkins fans clamoring for something new. That said, worshippers at the altar of Billy Corgan are more than likely overjoyed by the recent release of Vieuphoria on DVD and its new corresponding soundtrack album, Earphoria. Showcasing live recordings and various TV appearances from the band's mega-successful Siamese Dream-era, Earphoria stands as an amazing display of a band that was just beginning to reach the pinnacle of both its commercial success and artistic output. The blistering, eight-minute-long "I Am One," for example, boasts more over-the-top sonic bombast and wall-of-guitar noise than the studio version, and "Today," recorded in the band's hometown in 1993, hasn't lost any of its greatness. This is a very welcome walk down memory lane.
