Punk music has always been in an epic battle against the "man," whether he be manifested in the president, the government, or a homeless shelter organization. The punk mecca, CBGB, is embroiled in a dispute with the latter. The Bowery Residents' Committee—which houses and feeds the homeless in New York and owns the property where CBGB smolders—claims the venue hasn't paid its rent in full and is threatening to kick the hoodlums out of their home. CBGB reps claim the BRC didn't bill them properly and turned off their heat. And so to settle the matter, CBGB will do what it does best: rock out, hardcore. All throughout August, the club will blast frenetic music from its speakers in an attempt to raise money to renew its lease, which ends on August 31, as part of the "Save CBGB" campaign. Currently 16 bands have been announced, including Living Colour, Thursday, and the fierce dance rockers, the Liars. Although the fair month is quickly approaching, the venue hasn't confirmed any dates, but word on the street is the straight-edge punks Gorilla Biscuits will take the stage for their one-night-only show on Aug. 14. It's the last hurrah for the Dead Boys as well, but they, unfortunately, do not know when that hurrah will be. In addition to attending shows, fans can visit www.savecbgb.org to pledge allegiance and money. The historic building and its notorious bathroom have probably seen more rock star stomach bile than any club in the world, and it would be a shame to let such a venue pass into non-hardcore hands. So visit the site, thrash to live music, and help save the punks from the not-for-profit homeless person fund.
