Stax Records 50th Anniversary Show

Stax Records 50th Anniversary Show
Jun 13, 2007
Story by: Ben Lasman

Legendary soul label Stax Records will hold its 50th Anniversary celebration June 22 at the Orpheum Theater in Memphis, Tennessee. Hosted by hip-hop stalwart Chuck D and Randy Jackson, the event will cull from Stax's storied past in a series of performances by soul's greatest, including Isaac Hayes and Booker T And The MGs. Formed by partners Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton, the label issued a seminal string of R&B hits throughout the '60s and '70s and jump started the careers of Otis Redding and Hayes, among others.

All proceeds from the show will be donated to the Stax Museum Of American Soul Music in Memphis. But for all its nostalgic callbacks, the event remains firmly rooted in the present era without losing sight of its historic significance. Members of Stax's current roster—Angie Stone, N'dambi and others—are slated to appear and Golden Circle tickets, which earn buyers a VIP pass and a complimentary T-shirt from the record label, will go on sale for $1000 a pop. History, it seems, does have its price.
