 POLYPHONIC SPREE: The Fragile Army
Jun 19, 2007
By Lisa Hresko

Though once perceived as the choir from the Church Of Kool-Aid due to their unconventional fashion choices, the Polyphonic Spree has disrobed and glammed up their chanting, which better complements ringleader—and former Tripping Daisy frontman—Tim DeLaughter's jittery warble. Much of the album sounds like an upbeat take on '70s theatrics–Floyd-on-Godspell choral movements with a Diamond Dogs aura—while still retaining a contemporary sound. If the Arcade Fire ditched the pipe organ for synths, it would sound something like "Mental Cabaret," and the title track would have been at home on the Killer's Hot Fuss. Fret not, though, longtime fans: Mid-album "We Crawl" climaxes with a triumphant movement of innumerable voices and trumpet fanfare much like the Spree of "Light and Day" fame. Now all they need is colorful lasers to shoot out from the stage as they perform.
