First a clothing line at Target, and now a guest spot on Nickelodeon's SpongeBob Squarepants? David Bowie always said he wanted to redefine himself with the times, and it looks like he's done just that. On Monday, November 12, the Starman himself will make his US cartoon debut by playing Atlantis' king Lord Royal Highness in Atlantis SquarePantis. Directed by Paul Tibbit, the TV movie finds SpongeBob (who lives in a pineapple under the sea) discovering the missing half of an ancient medallion believed to be a relic from the lost city of Atlantis. Bowie's Lord Royal Highness is at first at joy to see the little guy and his treasure—so much so that he takes them for a tour—until chaos ensues when SpongeBob's camera causes a mishap. Perhaps a better name should have been The Rise And Fall Of SpongeBob Squarepants? "SpongeBob has become somewhat of a celebrity among celebrities," says Majorie Cohn, executive vice president of original programming and development at Nickelodeon. "When you have a rock legend like David Bowie interested in doing a guest role on the show, there's no question that SpongeBob commands serious star power." www.nick.com/spongebobsquarepants www.davidbowie.com
