Sub Pop Goes The MP3

Sub Pop Goes The MP3
Nov 8, 2007
Story by: Joe Orovic

Sub Pop, home to artists like the Shins and Band of Horses, just imported almost 200 full-length albums into a digital format for sale, according to a snarky blog post on their website. The Seattle-based label will continue to have its artists available on other digital outlets like iTunes, but the website offers a small discount—each album—which includes 192 kbps MP3s and album artwork—is set at $9.90.

According to Dean Hudson, Sub Pop's director of technology and development, the price wasn't intricate math. "Ninety-nine cents times ten songs is $9.90. Nothing deeper than that." But he doesn't expect it to effect Sub Pop's relationship with Apple. "We've always had a pretty great relationship with Apple and I don't see that changing. They reach a pretty different audience than we do, and they're effective at selling in music in ways that we aren't."

Looking ahead, Hudson says the group at Sub Pop will work on exclusive content and video and any good idea you might have. He asks that you e-mail them to webmaster@subpop.com. Seriously. So load up on the label's staples while they work on EPs and singles in the coming months.
