Story by: Judy Berman

Green Owl Records, a new, musician-run label, will issue its first release, The Green Owl Comp: A Benefit For The Energy Action Coalition, April 8. The album features previously unreleased tracks by Deerhoof, Muse, Of Montreal, Bloc Party and Feist, among others. The double-disc package will include a 16-song audio CD and a DVD with bonus tracks, music videos and an interview with Energy Action co-founder Billy Parrish.

All proceeds for the compilation will go to the Energy Action Coalition, a youth-led umbrella group that includes more than 40 clean energy organizations in the US and Canada. The coalition has initiated a number of successful projects, including the Campus Climate Challenge, which has inspired 450-plus college campuses to adopt climate-neutral policies, and Power Shift, the nation's largest-scale environmental protest and lobby day.

Green Owl was founded by Ben Brewer of The Exit and The Appletrees; Ellenike Abreu, also of the Appletrees; and producer/engineer/musician Stephen Glicken. The New York-based company aims to distribute music in an environmentally sustainable way. To that end, it will use digital releases to reduce waste, all physical products will be packaged in 100-percent post-consumer paper and bands signed to label will tour in biodiesel-fueled vehicles.

"We started this label because we believe that the debate is over and we want to help close the gap between what is going on with the environment and what people can do about it," says Glicken, who is also Green Owl's president. "We hope to act as an example of how you can function as a company with the least negative effect on the environment. Hopefully more people will take these steps towards lowering their carbon footprint, which will help bring the cost down and make it a standard in the industry."
