Local Anesthetic is getting the retrospective CD compilation treatment from San Francisco-based label, Smooch. Currently in stores, The Local Anesthetic covers songs from 1977-'83, in a fairly wide variety of punk, post-punk, hardcore and other oddball, Reagan-era, fear-fuming sounds. The classic Denver punk label, started in 1981 by Duane Davis, co-owner of Denver's Wax Trax Records store, began in order to highlight the various noisemakers of the region. The first release was a single from the Gluons, which featured Allen Ginsberg on vocals. From there, the label got considerably less mid-brow, delving into some of the most insane sounds of that fruitful era on a load of quite limited 7-inch singles. The "best known" tune the label has unleashed is "My Dad's A Fucking Alcoholic" from the Frantix (which included members of underrated '90s glam-grunge group, the Fluid). The slobbering genius of that song has attracted obsessive attention of folks like Peter Buck and Thurston Moore. Ever since the Killed By Death and Bloodstains bootleg compilations appeared in the early '90s, obscure, un-fi punk rock from the late '70s is the new Nuggets, to the point that "Killed By Death," or "KBD," has become a genre tag. (Punch it into eBay and see how much comes up!) But rare is the well-done, legit compilation of this stuff. This collection is first in a series of Smooch archival reissues of '80s Denver bands that includes the Soul Merchants double-disc collection and a studio discography of Bum Kon.
