I Love Math 'Get To Point' With Old 97's

I Love Math 'Get To Point' With Old 97's
Apr 4, 2008
Story by: Michael Tedder

John Dufilho, frontman for Deathray Davies/drummer for Apples In Stereo, will release the sophomore album from his I Love Math side project, Getting To The Point Is Beside It, May 27 (Glurp/Summer Break). But despite the group's name, Dufihlo's new album is no journey into abstract, math-rocky territory, as the Dallas-based songwriter has said that the point for Point was to keep things simple, poppy and sparse.

Dufilho was joined on the record by bassist Jason Garner and keyboardist Andy Lester, both of whom he played with in Deathray, and drummer Philip Peeples, who also plays in the Old 97's. The 97's connections don't stop there, as I Love Math will open some upcoming shows for the Texas country rockers, who, as recently reported on CMJ.com, are touring behind a new release of their own, Blame It On Gravity.

"Generously, Philip is drumming with both bands for this tour in June," Dufilho says. "We'll bring him beer and set lists and we won't let him leave the stage."

Both Peeples and Dufilho balance multiple gigs, which leads both to aesthetic freedom and occasional logistical headaches.

"I write whatever mood I'm in and later decide whether it fits in with Math, the Deathray Davies, solo recordings, or the trash can," Dufilho says. "Touring-wise we've only had one conflict so far, so we've been lucky. We're terrible at multitasking, so generally we flip a lot of quarters."
