The live-music oriented, voter-registration initiative HeadCount is the subject of a new documentary, A Call To Action, which is available directly through the streaming video NetworkiClips.net. Produced by philanthropic film company Concerts4Charity, Call was filmed at last year's Langerado Music Festival and tells the story of how HeadCount emerged from the jam band scene to mobilize music fans to vote. "Concerts4Charity is an amazing organization that takes it upon itself to spread the work of other non-profits by documenting their work on film," says Marc Brownstein, bass player for the Disco Biscuits and one of HeadCount's founders. "Filming at Langerado was such an exhilarating experience. All of the support that we received from all of the artists just goes to show how important the work that the volunteers at HeadCount are doing." In addition to Brownstein, the film features appearances by Dave Matthews, Bob Weir, Trey Anastasio, O.A.R. and Michael Franti, among others. Like with HeadCount itself, which has registered more than 60,000 voters since 2004, Brownstein hopes that fans who only check out the film for the music will leave with something to think about. It's an idea idea that has work for the non-partisan organization so far. "It definitely seems that within our scene, the kids are plugged into the political process, though that wasn't always the case," Brownstein says. "I like to believe that HeadCount has played a part in that." While Brownstein sees the film, and the high voter-registration his organization has already achieved, as a validation for HeadCount's work, he says the group, which counts more than 2,000 volunteers, is hardly resting on its laurels and will be out in full force this year at concerts such as Bonnaroo, so they can "continue helping to fuel the explosion in youth voter turnout in the upcoming election." www.headcount.org www.iclips.net/acta.php
