PERE UBU: 390 Degrees of Simulated Stereo Nov 10, 2000
By David G. Rosenberg
This is the first part of a proposed trilogy of live recordings documenting the career of Pere Ubu. Comprised of songs from what many consider to be Ubu's best period - commencing with their first indie single through the Modem Dance LP - 390 Degrees varies in sound and performance quality from excellent to awful, and will probably have greatest appeal to Ubu fanatics; all others should proceed with caution. Historically, the most interesting tracks are "Can't Believe It," "Over My Head," and "Sentimental Journey" (very different from the song of the same name on Modern Dance). All three feature the six-piece Ubu band that produced "Final Solution" and "30 Seconds Over Tokyo," and are prime examples of the `60s' psychedelia from which Ubu draws its inspiration - with twangy guitar, feedback and simple, bouncy chord changes. Unfortunately, these songs were recorded on a portable cassette recorder and they sound it. An early version of "Humor Me " is also interesting.
