Beefheart, Velvets Are 'Under Review'

Beefheart, Velvets Are 'Under Review'
Feb 28, 2006
Story by: Rebecca Raber

The Velvet Underground and Captain Beefheart are the most recent subjects of releases in Music Video Distributors' Under Review DVD series. As with other titles in the series (like Small Faces and Queen), the discs, due out April 15, mix interview and performance footage with review and comment from experts and critics. The Velvet Underground DVD also features exclusive interviews with Mo Tucker, Billy Name and Doug Yule, as well as film from Andy Warhols' private collection and criticism from Village Voice music editor Robert Christgau and Luna's Dean Wareham, among others. The Beefheart DVD includes interview footage of Don Van Vliet himself, as well as rare promo films, TV appearances and contributions from virtually every member of the Magic Band. Though the Velvets released their own DVD (Velvet Redux: Live MCMXCIII) in January, Under Review will be Beefheart's only commercially available DVD. (Anton Corbijn's Some Yoyo Stuff doesn't count; it's about Vliet the painter, not Beefheart.)
